What are the Polynesians and other Pacificers?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Are they, like, a mix of Negro and Mongoloid, or did they evolve seperately?

you are closer related to them you think. as you are to every living human... you find out here:

Great link Mel!

2

How do you know how closely related I think I am, #1? Thanks for the link, but I can't find anything that answers my question.

3

if you follow the link i gave you and read whats there (especcially about the human journey) you find the answer to your question.

but reading your last post... maybe dont even try

4

Please drop the attitude, mel. You make inane assumptions about me, palm me off with an overlong (for the purposes of such a straighforward question) and insufficient link (which suggests you don't know the answer and haven't read the link yourself, or you're being unnecesarily obtuse) and then insult me further, with no good reason. Why even bother replying if you don't know?

5

Nice link, and I haven't read it well so perhaps there is an update on this... but, l believe the origins of Polynesians are still controversial. Some people believe they came from Asia, and the presence of Lapita pottery is evidence for this. Other people believe they came from South America because of some of the crops used. I think the belief is that they didn't have the seafaring skills to have travelled to South America and back again (to have obtained crops that way). Still they managed to reach some fairly obscure localities (Easter Island) so obviously some people believe this was possible.

6

just realised that this probably doesn't answer your question either, but it suggests a source....

irrumatio
i dont want to insult you. you ask, i point out where you find answers about it, but you dont bother to look, this link contains information and maps about human migration..

in general there is no short and simple answer to your question.
if you realy want to understand it you have to read about human migration, genetic anthropology and the human genome which contains information about relation and migration of our antcestors and their adaptions to differnt environments.
its a tree with many branches with roots in africa.

this one is interesting to Polynesian Pathways but sometimes a bit controverse

the micronesians, who are seperate from the polynesians and melanesians, originated in se asia. they migrated through the islands, down to New Guinea, and then back again. You can see the tremendous variation of skin color and hair type through out Micronesia. I don't remember the details of the other two groups. There has been some interesting work done with genetics- using hair samples. It is too late for me to remember the details, but the origins are not as clear cut as they might be.

It's fairly unusual to have this type of poster on this branch. If you look at 'his' history he has not been a TT member long, but has flooded it with posts.

melbar and Api - I would suggest that you ignore this poster.

10

Thor Heyerdahl's theory of Polynesians having originated in South America is pretty much discredited these days, with just about any serious book citing the origin in SE Asia as the undisputed fact, with even the migration route taken by them well traced.
It is supported both by archelological and lingustic evidence, and racial similarity (I myself couldn't tell Polynesians from certain Indonesian ethnic groups).

Here's another example of the OP's posting.

and a lot of time spent on the "your choice" thread as well. May be the OP is just picking up some bad habits, such as over-reaction, accusing others of what he does himself. As #10 notes, this looks like an effort at troll baiting.

interesting topic though, what with the links others have provided

13

That Polynesian Pathways site has some wingnut ideas.

While there is evidence of Polynesian and visitation here there is NFW the Haida's ancestors are Polynesian.

Anyone who says so knows SFA about either group-totally different peoples culturally/socially and racially.

14

That PP website looks like a lunatic joke as a whole.

15

There is a theory that the people of Malaita in Solomon Islands are the lost tribes of Israel - probably no more bizarre than some others mentioned here.

16

Perhaps no more bizarre, but that is why there are so many Mormons in the islands- they teach that the Pacific Islanders (or some of them) are the lost tribes. Odd but true.

17

The Solomon Islanders that believe this aren't Mormons - they belong to the South Seas Evangelical Church, and this belief was around long before the Mormons came to Solomon Islands (which only happened in 1995).
One of the reasons Mormons gain a following n the islands is that they offer a chance to travel to the USA.

The "School Mormons" - education and a chance to attend Brigham Young University!

I've never been able to work out what part part Basketball plays in the Mormon ritual - I know it is important though, because I have never seen a Mormon church / school in the South Pacific without a basketball court ;-)

Basketball (and college basketball) is very big in the States. It's easier to export than baseball or (American style) football.
