What's the best way to travel between NZ, Cook Islands and Bora Bora?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi all,

my girlfriend and I are going to spend our Honeymoon in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. We're currently planning to spend two weeks in New Zealand and about one week on the Pacific Islands afterwards.

In fact, we would love to combine a stay in Aitutaki and Bora Bora during that week. After some investigation it seems nearly impossible to combine those two destinations within this time mainly due to a lack of flights. But hopefully we are mistaking ;-)

Can anybody give me a hint what would be the best way to travel between the islands? Can somebody recomment a good source for further information?

Thanks in advance for your support!

Best regards,
Andreas

Aitutaki to Rarotonga - Air Rarotonga

Rarotonga to Tahiti - Air Rarotonga/Air Tahiti - they share the route, can book with either for the same flights. I believe that there are only two flights a week.

Tahiti to Bora Bora - Air Tahiti

NZ to Raro can be with both Air NZ or with cheaper Virgin Blue.

Tahiti to NZ with Air NZ (and Air Tahiti???), or by flying back to Raro to use Virgin again.

Although Aitutaki and Bora Bora are both incredible and SO beautiful - I don't think it is too realistic to try to do them both in one week. You would have to fly from:

New Zealand to Rarotonga
Raro to Aitutaki

Aitutaki to Rarotonga
Rarotonga to Papeete (Tahiti)
Papeete to Bora Bora

Bora Bora to Papeete
Papeete to...whereever home is....

That is a lot of flights and travelling to squeeze into a week. What I would suggest is doing either:

  1. Rarotonga and Aitutaki
    or
  2. Moorea and Bora Bora OR Bora Bora and Taha'a

Try combining 2 islands in French Polynesia or 2 Islands in the Cook Islands rather than 1 in the Cooks and one in French Polynesia just so you don't end up spending most of your week travelling in and out of airports and get to enjoy your honeymoon!!

Cheers,
Carl

Flip a coin, heads Aitutaki, tails Bora Bora, I agree too much to accomplish in short time unless you have your own jet.
