Whatever happened to the CI get together

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

I remember a few years ago it was proposed that many of the regular posters would do a get together in Rarotonga (at Raro's place I think it was mentioned at the time), during early 2008 if my memory isn't too bad.
Did anyone make it there for a get together?
At the time there were many "yes I'll be there" responses.

I was the one that proposed this.

It was unattainable... a lot of regular posters have vanished and the feasability and interest with it fizzled understandably.
Raro sold his joint and moved back to America..
Many of the posters on here had come to the Pacific as part of a RTW or "dream trip of a lifetime". It's easy to say you will return, but only a few ever do.

It would have been a great deal of fun...

Yes, it would have been fun. But the old TT was one thing that was easy to be in on and keep all of us together. Also, airfares have shot up quite a bit over the last couple of years.

I guess we could start a "rolling party" wherein if any of us are heading in the area of another poster, we try to meet up for a drink, etc.

For this to work we'll need to list at least the city/town and country where we are currently residing.

So, I'll start if off:

Raro: in San Francisco area

Others can add their general info if they like.

Ozziegiraffe: usually, Lismore, NSW, Australia, about 3/4 hour inland from Byron Bay.
At least once a year in Honiara and Malaita, Solomon Islands. (Incidentally, the only financial interest I have in the small artificial island of Lismore in Malaita is in providing the cash not available in the village for the bush materials and tools to build the house. The whole intention is that the people who live there permanently share any income derived from tourism. I just get to enjoy my visits there).

Papa Mike--checking in from the frozen tundra of Montana, where I summer. Just finished the second edition of the Cook Islands Handbook, which will be available through a new publisher later this summer (end of blatent self-promotion). If your travels include Montana, stop by and we'll have a toast! Will be in the Cooks in January of next year and I am always keen to meet with fellow travelers

Watsoff, rainy old Vancouver, BC - how do we keep this post from disappearing into cyberspace?

5

I am not quite a regular but nevertheless: in about a year from now, I'll live in Florida - less exciting than Moorea where my husband wanted to move. We would be happy to meet you guys.

6

I thought it was you Islandboi who had proposed it.
I was supposed to take the wife back over to the cooks for her 35th birthday but her studies and lack of funds got in the way (those kids cost a lot) - it would have been perfect timing for us.

islandboi here... I am in rainy, cold Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Dreaming of the beaches of Samoa as usual...

Newfie here in Burlington, Ont, within 45 minutes of either Toronto or Niagara Falls/Buffalo. We are still working on getting to Palau and would love to see Fiji again. It was great getting to meet Raro in Rarotonga a couple of years ago and would love to meet up with any of the regulars if they are heading this way.

If I have any money, the Cooks next January might be feasible, papa Mike. Anyone else?

Silvanocat usually in Los Angeles but currently in Palau.

I didn't say yes to Rarotonga 08 because it was scheduled during tax season (no, not an accountant). January - April ng for me.
