Where to go in Fiji ?

We are thinking of going to Fiji late December 2013 to mid January 2014 for 14 days.

I would like some suggestions on where to go for the three of us [ including a 15 year teenager daughter] on resorts, islands etc., for a relaxing time, near a beach where we kick back with a chance to mix with the locals and shop.

First up I would do a cruise for 3 or 4 days that way you get to see a lot of Islands and visit a village and school, then I would move to the north of the main island, for 2 or 3 days, then travel along the kings road, not sure of your budget but there are islands or land resorts on the east coast side for 2 or 3 more days, then an overnight in Suva,( if you are wanting shopping), then continue on to either the resorts at Pacific Harbour, some shopping there also, Beachhouse or for a splurge the Intercontinental at Natadola, for the best beach in Fiji, there is also a second resort at Natadola beach which is lower priced,

Locals can't afford to shop in the places that appeal to you & yours-the only locals you'll find in those places will be working there.

or you can visit the fruit and veg market where all the locals sell their produce, they have very sweet pineapple here and the way they cut it into wedges for sale is easy to eat and cheap.

I think you were making two comments, "a chance to mix with the locals' and the only places you will do that is markets as the villages are not open to visitors unless invited, and shop, and that will be in the major towns.
