Seems this question has been asked on Virtual Tourist: http://forum.virtualtourist.com/Solomon_Islands-3214-2-10082374/Papua-to-Solomon-is-by-boat-malaria-precautions.html

Doesn't look too feasible, but hopefully someone with some up-dated information can help. I'll ask Ozziegiraffe (see her answer in the link).

The first option is easier legally, as there is an immigration post at the PNG-Indonesia border at Wutung. It would be easier to do it in the opposite direction, PNG to Indonesia though, because of visa issues.

Ozziegiraffe is off line for a while, but she did send me a quick not saying that she thinks there are 7 shipping companies that go to PNG from Australia. Not sure that's of any use, you might need to do an extensive Google.

This

Is a small ship cruise line that operates out of Cairns, Queensland.
A few of the regular cruise lines do visit PNG and occasionally Solomon Islands out of Sydney or Brisbane. Other than that, the advice Watsoff quoted from Trip Advisor hasn't changed.

A 13 day cruise from Cairns to PNG for $9000+?
I could do a round-the-world trip for less! :-)
