Yasawa Flyer- is it the only way??

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hey,
I am heading to Fiji tomorrow for 3 weeks, want to do some island hopping and have been looking online. The Yasawa Flyer boat keeps popping up as a good way to get around. Just wondering is it the only way though? Is it worth buying the 3 week ticket and is the one including accomodation worth it or is it just better to organise our own accomodation? It's myself and my husband going, we are both 24, looking to for the usual Fiji experiences, relaxing on a beach/water activities/fijian culture and a few party nights thrown in! We would be looking to stay in budget accomodations but hopefully double rooms rather than dorms. Any advice at all would be appriciated! Thanks!

Yes - it is the only way if you are travelling around different resorts. There is the odd resort (eg Octopus - that does have double rooms attached to it's dorm) that has it's own boat but they will not transfer you to another resort when you want to move on.
Blue Lagoon has 2 roomed tents that might suit you.

It is the only easy way IF your island-hopping is restricted to the Yasawas.
Which I think would actually be OK for what you say you want.

In the rest of Fiji, much cheaper local boats are the main ways to get around.

Thanks for the tips guys! have stayed in Nadi for 2 nights and we are now on the coral coast for a few days, then going to head back up and get the flyer for 2 weeks instead. Thinking of staying in Robinson Crusoe island for 6 nights cos' they have a special on at the moment. Then I think it will be either Mana/Beachcomber for 2 nights, 1 night in waya, 2 nights on mantaray island and 2 nights in nacula before heading back for one night to nadi before flying out! Working out well more expensive than expected but hopefully it will be worth it! hoped to do the shark diving here, bit disappointed PADI cert is required, i thought you could do it on a intro dive or something. Tip for people in future: Do your research! I didn't do mine properly and it's showing now!

Laszlo,

Would you be so kind as to elaborate on, provide advice on, finding local travel among the islands of Fiji. I am particularly interested in the islands to the east of the main islands.

Suva is the main hub for passenger shipping.
There are regular passenger ships (several each week or even daily) to major islands like Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Ovalau and Kadavu, and less frequent cargo ships to remote islands like Rotuma or the Laus.
I really think any guidebook should have more detail on these, the Moon guide to Fiji definitely does.
