| cosmic_explorer14:26 UTC23 Feb 2007 | Just for the beginners, where is a good place to start learning about Tuvalu.
Websites, books, anyone?
(Yes, I know there is a LP book, might get one of these too!)

| gazhawkins03:03 UTC24 Feb 2007 | Best guide book is "The South Pacific Handbook" by David Stanley, Moon Publications. Mr. Stanley has a useful website:-
[L=]www.southpacific.org[/L]

Flights are only available from Fiji or Kiribati and are not cheap. It's possible to take the Tuvalu Govt. Boat (Nivanga II) from Suva to Funafuti - it stops in Suva for regular servicing.

| gazhawkins20:34 UTC25 Feb 2007 | Laszlo: I actually met the guy who wrote this book, back in 1998. He was working for the UK Foreign Office VSO - Voluntary Service Overseas.
You couldn't make it up - an aid project where we send lawyers to develop the islands economy. The reality is that for minor offences, there is a perfectly good tribal system in place. However, for more serious offences, "a peoples lawyer" is required - as this is dealt with under what must presumably be British Law.

| rrtw200805:09 UTC25 Jul 2008 | The Air Pacific flights from Fiji (Suva) have started. It is about FJ$600 one way all up (inc taxes). There are specials depending on how early you book.

| sailorbill22:38 UTC19 Oct 2008 | I have not seen it mentioned but a great book for the entire pacific is "Landfalls of Paradise" By earl Hinz. It is targeted to sailors on private yachts but has a lot of good background info for other travelers. Bill

| mandmike19:21 UTC14 Apr 2009 | The LP book is a bit out of date as we found in March 09. When we were there the hotel and Filomena were fully booked and we stayed in the Lodge. It just took one tour party of Japense to fill the place up - even the IMF could not get into the hotel!
A few updates: 1 - The internet cafe has moved to just south of the government buildings at the corner of Namo Rd. The Coconut Internet open 9-6 M-F, very friendly and fast. 2 - Another good chinese now in operationon the main road just north of the Lodge, Hala Vai Seafood Restaurant, tel 20562, open 9am to 10pm. Huge portions, and great taste. 3 - Air Pacific's Pacific Sun offshoot is flying to Tuvalu, Nadi via Suva. Expensive but at least they are doing it. All bookable on line with Air Pacific. 4 - Motorcycle hire - we just asked at the hotel, and au$10 for a day plus petrol, I think it was $2 for the day in fuel.
Hope this helps.
