5 days - to go to Tanna or not?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

So, quick question:

I have 5 days in Vanuatu booked in March 2010, arrive Port Vila on the 13th, mates wedding in Vila on the 15th and leave for Melbourne on the 18th.

I'm trying to keep this quick trip pretty cheap, but really want to enjoy what Vanuatu has to offer. Basically my question is this: should I shell out for a flight to Tanna and spend a couple of days there, or not worth it for the time line I have?

Have only just realised that Efate might be a bit of a bust.....

All thoughts welcome!

If you can afford the flight, go!
Tanna is much more interesting than Efate.

My rule of thumb is "will I be back this way?". If yes I might pass on visiting an interesting site for the later visit. If not, I will make the effort to get there. Tanna is one of those places you should have on your 'to see' list. It was definitely worth the time and cost and you can do a lot in just two days.

I can definitely recommend Tanna. The volcano really is a must see. It is an amazing experience. If you are going go overnight so you can see the volcano at sunset. It is much more spectacular in the evening. I would go for a few days if you can. You can always visit the Kastom villages (Yakel was great) or take a boat tour.

I'm with #2, if you aren't planning to go back there I would definitely go to Tanna. We spent 8 days there and it was really beautiful.

four days at Tanna is maximum to stay there.

Tanna is nice island.Volcano Yasur ,trash plains around the volcano and also watefalls are amazing.But.There are no roads,no shops no restaurants. We lived also in friendly bungalows. When the bungallows jeep is not availlable you have to go everywhere by foot only. There are not any kind of public traffic on Tanna.Snorkelling is fantastic there. But if you want to make PADI courses ,much more better is to go to main island(Efate I think].You can rent a car in Villa and go around the island. There are many interresting places as MeleMele watterfalls(placed in tropical forest with many flowers and turquoise watter, blow holes perfect for swimming ,also aincient caves, look points, and white beeaches aroud island.Tanna is vulcanic island and all beaches are black. At the end of the day is nice to go to Villa downtown and drink beer and smell and hear the Villa.

I was VERY happy staying more than 4 days on Tanna.

I stayed on Tanna for 8 days and would have been happy to stay for much longer. I felt like there was much more I could have seen. But it depends if you want to do stuff all the time. I am the sort of person who is happy to relax, read books and snorkel some days (rather than continuously sightseeing), but if you are big on activities all the time when you are travelling maybe it would be too long for you.

It sounds like you might enjoy one of the 2 day tours to Tanna. Try these guys.
