Ambrym (and Malekula)

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

I am having trouble trying to find transportation options to Ambrym. Without doing a "fly-by" helicopter day tour out of Efate, what is the other way to get to the island? I'll probably have three days which I could spend on this "adventure". Can I work my way up north from Efate stopping at Ambrym (and Malekula) on my way to Santo? Or will I have to get to Santo first and then backtrack? Thanks

Slow cargo-passenger ships from Vila to Santo usually stop at EITHER Ambrym OR Malekula. There are also regular passenger flights.
Mind you, 3 days sounds a bit too short for these islands...

With only 3 days, flying is your only option. Just take a regular scheduled Vanair flight.

They go to Craig Cove, West Ambrym about 3 times/week, or Ulei in SE Ambrym about the same, stopping in Paama en route. Ulei is the one you want for volcano access. If there are 3 or more of you it is also economical to charter a small plane ( 4 seater) or seaplane.

Flights to Norsup on Malekula are more regular - or South West Bay, Malekula about twice a week.
