Bicycles in Santo?Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu
I am planning a trip to Santo later in the year. It's my first trip to Santo, I have been to Pt Vila and Tanna a number of times. I realise that Santo and all of Vanuatu is hilly and mountainous, but is there any merit in bringing bicycles with us to Santo? At least for the purpose of riding around town and getting from the airport to our accommodation. We then intend to leave them behind for the locals. Has anyone taken a bicycle to Vanuatu. Did the airline charge you extra for it?
Since it seems no one has responded, I better. Bicycling Santo? Not a bad idea, the terrain is relatively flat and roads easy to navigate (would not try it in Port Vila). Giving the bikes afterwards is wonderfull. The airline is quite good with domestic cargo, but best check the Air Vanuatu website: http://www.airvanuatu.com/ . Must sees in Santo: Riri river, Million dollar point, Lonnoch beach, Vil Vil custom village.Good photos of Vanuatu are on: http://www.vanuatu-hotels.vu/photo . | 1
Many thanks for your response. We'll take the bikes then , providing it's not too much extra hassle or cost with the airline. | 2
Biking in Santo is fantastic, I biked from Tassiriki to Luganville and then Luganville to Hog Harbour. Definitely hilly and mountainous, especially the west coast, terrain is a bit easier on the east coast. Incredibly hospitable people, we were invited to stay in the villages we passed through and given food everywhere we went. As a thank you to the people who were so generous to us I bought a bunch of school supplies in Luganville and gave them to the women on the way back. I have some pics from the trip on http://community.webshots.com/user/zugunruhe in the Vanuatu Sept - Nov album (somewhere near the end). Don't know about the cost of bringing bikes with airlines as I arrived by boat, but don't imagine it will be too much of a hassle with Air Vanuatu as the locals all load up the flights with their livestock anyways, and huge boxes of food bought in Vila, so there should be room for a bike or two... | 3
