Bypass Port Vila for Espiritu Santo?

Planning a holiday for 2.5 weeks for culture, pristine beaches, snorkelling etc, and wondered if I should fly direct to Expiritu Santo, thereby not bothering to go to Port Vila at all? Will we be missing anything on this main island if we bypass it totally and spend our time on Expiritu Santo and maybe another nearby island? All opinions suggestions welcome.

Actually I meant Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu - one of the outlying islands.

Vila has a rather different feel from Santo, being much more like a little resort town with a lot more possiblities for eating out, shopping and the like - if you need these, go there, if not, skip it.

For culture, pristine beaches and snorkelling I found Santo FAR superior, but some people find it "too quiet".
