Currency in Vanuatu

Can anyone please confirm what currency is recommended to take to Vanuatu? I have been told that Australian dollars are widely used but then on the internet it indicates that it is not. Am I better to just stock up on local currency and avoid any hassles? And also is it better to purchase local currency at the airport or in town? Any recommendations greatly appreciated :-)

We just got some Vatu from Travelex at the Airport in NZ before we left for Vanuatu.
Just enough for shopping at the local shops and markets so you don't have a myriad of different conversion costs and put the resort charges on our credit card.
