Daily expenses in Vila/Tanna and Santo

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

My girlfriend and I are travelling to Vanuatu next week and just wondering excluding accommodation costs what daily expenses for food, drinks and tours would be if travelling on a mid range budget?.

I find this hard to answer as it really depends on what you do, tours you take and how you travel.

My partner and I just spent 10 nights in Santo, staying at 4 different places ranging from reasonably cheap (Lonnoc) to expensive resort accommodation (Bokissa) and in between (Oyster Island and Deco Stop). We did everything we wanted to do, were conscious of money but did not go without anything. Every meal we ate at a restaurant. We went on 2 organised tours, travelled a mixture of public transport and where unavoidable we used transport organised by the resort. All up, including accommodation we spent $3,300 AUD for the 2 of us.

I recommend using public transport, I found it very enjoyable and you save a lot of money.

We came back from Port Vila last Thursday. It is a hard question to answer, but I will try. We did a few different day tours, and they all seem to be approximately similar in price. A full day trip to Lelepa Island, including transport, guides, snorkelling equipment, a BBQ lunch and going to 2 snorkelling spots, a cave and a trip to the village was 7 800 vatu. Per Person. The other day trip we did around Efate Island was the same price (it also included snacks and lunch).
As for food, it really depends what you want. You can eat quite cheaply at the waterfront at the market. Or spend as much as you like. Dining out of the resort was cheaper. There aer some decent cafes (jills American Cafe was really good and quite reasonable). Some fancier resturants have good lunch specials which is good to take advantage of. We had a great lunch our first day at Chill (on the harbour - has an awesome view of the harbour and Iririki Island) which included a glass of wine/beer, and 2 courses for 950 vatu. The thai restaurant Nirvana also had a good lunch special (and was delicious) for 1 500 vatu. Of course if you don't take advantage of the good Tusker beer and the french and Australian wine, things will be cheaper too.
