Dear Friends
I'm going to spend 6 night on this Island and i'd like to pick up some info that weren't clearly mentioned in the lonely planet guide:
- Is there a sort of regular minibus service between Luganville to Lonnoc beach?
- Is it worthwile to spend 1/2 night on Lonnoc beach and what about the reef there (I mean snorkelling) ?
- regarding backpackers accommodation between Unity park Motel and new Look Motel whic one do you rate better?
thanks a lot for your attention and useful info
ciao Adolfo

But trucks bound for Hog Harbour and baeyond do pass the turn-off to Lonnoc, from where it's an easy walk.<blockquote>Quote

There are decent reefs off Champaigne Beach, though to reach better ones out in the bay, you must go on a (cheap) canoe trip.<blockquote>Quote

When I was on Santo last year there was a regular daily mini-bus between Luganville & Lonnoc. It leaves the petrol station in Luganville each afternoon ar around 3:30pm, just hang around & you'll suss it out. The mini bus leaves lonnoc each morning at around 6:30 - 7:00. Ask staff at the bungalows & they'll arrange for it pick you up from your bungalow.

Definately worth staying at Lonnoc for a couple of nights, the beach & Champagne beach (20 mins walk) are beautiful. Make sure you get into the sea just before sunrise! However as far as snorkelling went, we found Lonnoc very disappointing. Most of the coral was dead, (apparently caused by a cyclone a few years back), with only the odd small patch of living coral with only small fish around it. Perhaps we didn't go far enough out?

This reply is probably too late for you, but do not go to lonnoc without prebooking. Last year we caught the minibus from the petrol station, but when we got there - almost dark, the place was locked up and there was noone there. Fortunately we really wanted to go to Vatthe and the driver took us on there - at quite a lot more cost but we were effectively hiring the bus at this stage and it was quite a lot further.

lonnoc is lovely - ideal place for a holiday.
