Finding a Vanuatu Adventure

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

Hi All :o)

My boyfriend and I who are in our late 20s, plan to visit the area for just under 2 weeks.
Just a few questions...
I would like to visit at the end of April/early May (I am itching to get away) Will the weather still be wet season?
The idea of staying with locals sounds very interesting, how do I literally go about this??
It seems the easiest way to travel within Vanuatu is by internal flights. To minimise the cost of flights, can anyone suggest a cheap way or recommend a few good islands...
I have my Open Water dive ticket whereas my boy has Advanced. Do they offer adventure dives that allow me to dive deep if I dont obtain my Advanced in time?
Can anyone recommend any good night life spots?

Staying with locals extremely easy - go out to an island, go to a village and if someone doesnt offer then just ask around. I spent 6 weeks traveling like this. The locals are extremely friendly and always willing to help. All the islands I went to were interesting, but some are better for certain things than others. Culturally and scenically I found Espiritu Santo the most rewarding, and it has good wreck diving. You can get a 20% discount off all flights within the country if you fly to Vanuatu on Air Vanuatu, then present your international ticket when purchasing internal flights.

there are no good night life spots. Port Vila has plenty of restaurants and bars but theyre usually pretty empty. Luganville has even less and theyre even emptier. Elsewhere you're looking at kava bars only.

April

BEST time of the year for adventure in Vanuatu

For two weeks I would recommend the following.

1) Fly to Ambrym and get a small boat to Fanla (Kastom Village) and watch the traditional rom dancers. You can also do a hike and camp on an active volcano - good times.

2) After that (i think its a friday) you can get the cargo ship (500 vt) and transfer out to pentecoste, and go and see the land diving (nangol). Make sure you see one off the tourist trail - you will never see anything like that in your life time.....

Spend a week in the bungalows by the Ocean and get Kava in ya!

Fly home

As for the night spots in town you can head to Voodoo bar, Ankor Inn or for a real cultural experience Maxemillions ro Trader Vics ( be careful in those last two clubs - some kranky folk about)

As for rain - it always rains - however this is a good time
