G'day

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

I have to answer this question in regards the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu...

Quote

• Strong general Knowledge of international development issues and challenges, combined with an in-depth understanding of the history and current state of affairs in the regions/s.

any ideas?

Something like:

"I have a broad understanding of the underlying and overwhelming issues related to colonial imperialism in the past, the onslaught of modern tribal affiliation and resulting jealousy concomitant with kinship prerogatives, blended with a gentle juxtaposition of neo-modern colonial attitudes fueling a regenerative pride and assimilation of traditional folk cultures with modernistic approaches to eco-friendly and hyperbolic macroeconomics theory. RAMSI is on a par with the ombudsmenlike sycophany of Vila, all mixed with the exploitation of regional resources for the benefit of global corparations, but tempered by the fact that graft and corruption is still available for like-minded individuals with high connections. In other words, I'll support whatever you guys get into, just give me a little cut under the table."

....or something like that??

Harry,
I suggest you watch the following websites:
Guadalcanal forum. Solomon Star newspaper,

OOps, sent this before I had finished.
Some more sites:
Solomons People First network, Solomon Times

These should give you a idea of what is happening in Solomon Islands.

The ABC's Pacific Beat gives an Australian slant.

thank you!!!

Ahh, Harry sounds like one of the selection questions for a job with one of AusAids NGO providers.
As well as Ozziegiraffe's excelent leads a good place for research into this question would be Wikipedia the on line encyclopedia they have a large section on the Solomons and a huge amount of links to other resources.

5

thanks.

The job is based in the Solomons but involves managing staff and travel to Vanuatu as well. It is with AVI.

I have experience in Tonga, but none in Vanuatu or the Solomons.

6

Hi, Harrry,
If it is with AVI, you would need to know a fair bit about the provinces, as many of the volunteers work there.
Suggest you also look at the Privinces section of PFnet, though it is mainly out of date, and also Exploring Solomons

On second thought, maybe I will apply for the job myself.

7

excellent sources, so thanks all

any similar links for info on Vanuatu?

Harry,

Try this at the Ausaid site - has some project links as well.

Ausaid - Vanuatu

There are also pages for the other countries that Ausaid operates in.

Cheers,

Rob

Hey mate,

I'm an AYAD in Vanuatu, and honestly don't stress out too much. The application process sounds pretty daunting, but if you have the skills, your in. They don't necessarily require obscene amounts of knowledge in terms of geography, but just want to know that you are interested in international development and are willing to stick out the term of your assignment.

Good luck, when does it start?? Well be seeing you if its soon ;)

haven't heard a word from Solomons or Vanuatu.

however, I still have two chances in Tonga.
