hideaway island resort

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

hi guys

does any body have any first hand knowledge of hideaway island resort? It looks nice in pictures and sounds nice. A few things concern me though... i notice people can take day tours out there. also notice that cruise ship people can go out there (i am very very keep to avoid cruise ship people) and there looks in pictures to be lots of kids. Reading reviews though it sounds like alot of people had a nice, secluded, romantic time but the above stuff worries me.
Am i safe to expect a nie, quiet, romantic time with my partner or am i going to be subjected to very resort-y, tackyness surrounded by screaming kids and loud annoying americans off cruise ships?
any help would be great thanks!

Ah, come on... Cruise ship people are a riot. You can have alot of fun with them.

Were there when cruise ships were in port but not many came to the island anyway and there was not an overabundance of kids when we were there.
There was not a lot of sand on the beach just pebbles and the island is very small but we just went for the snorkeling and that was good.

There was a thread earlier this year - 19 March about Sandy Beaches in Pt Vila and Tanna in which someone is negative about Hideaway. Sorry, I don't know how to link you to it.

Hideaway is not as good as in the pictures and as bad as you seems to fear. We went there for a day. We were not impressed. The beach is okay, but the snorkeling is deceptive, too many people go there and ruin the corals stepping on them. Probably all resorts in Port Vila offers a tour to Hideway Island, so you'll see people on day tours every day. But people were quiet. I can't tell about the accommodation there, but it was not that inviting. This is definitely not the place for a secluded romantic time. Maybe you should go to another resort and go to Hideaway on a day trip like everybody else. Check out the reviews in TripAdvisor if you have not done it already. And happy travel in Vanuatu, an amazing country.

It might have been me who commented about Hideaway Island on Mar. 19.

Anywho, it's not horrible by any means, but after spending a few weeks soaking up the culture at other spots, it was a bit of a let down to spend our last few days at an island where the purpose seemed to be to bring a more western experience to westerners. If lazing on a beach, listening to western music, drinking tropical drinks with umbrellas, and watching presentations of local culture (rather than the real thing) turns you on then you might enjoy it. For us, it was a an anticlimatic bore and a waste of money.

And ya, you have to watch out for the cruise ship tourists on Efate, especially those obnoxious amerikans. ;-)

Anyone can go to the island as a day-tripper. There's a free ferry but it costs to get onto the island. We went as daytrippers and I was pleased we were not staying there since the island is tiny - I walked around it in under 6 minutes. I could see myself being very bored very quickly. There were no kids on the island during the day we were there.
