Island Hopping in Vanuatu...

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

Hi,

Was wondering if anyone could give me some information on travelling to Vanuatu please - would be much appreciated. My boyfriend and I are planning to spend two weeks in Vanuatu in June/July. I have a few queries:

-Apart from domestic air travel, are there any other ways to travel between the islands - what are they, how much and are they reliable?

-Where are the best places to go diving/snorkelling?

-Which is the best place to spend some time getting away from it all (i.e Is there an island that is more "off the beaten track?")

Thankyou!!!

There are boats, which cost about half the air-fare, but they are irregular and conditions aboard very basic.

Snorkelling and reefs in general get better northwards.
Off Santo there are spots probably as good as anywhere in Vanuatu.

Most of Vanuatu is well off the beaten track.
The overwhelming majority of visitors never make it beyond Efate, most of those who do only visit Tanna or Santo, and then often only on a day-trip.
That still leaves plenty of islands to choose from - browse this site.

with 2 weeks i wouldnt risk wasting time on boats. Theyre often late or totally cancelled and you end up spending more money than you'd have saved in a place you've already visited just waiting for the boat

You could also do a sailing trip in the Vanuatu Islands, then you get to see the remote outer islands and live life on sea which is great. It is quite costly but good value for money. Have a look at the company Lef Expeditions, they sail through Vanuatu and could be interesting. Not sure about local outfitters, most of the time the yachts are small and more weather dependent but have a look! Have Fun!
