Luganville - tips!

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

Hey,
Me and a friend are travelling to Vanatu in September this year on our medical elective.
We will be based in and around Luganville for 6 weeks. Has anyone been there? Any advice?
Specifically:
1) How to get to Luganville from Port Villa?
2) Good cheap basic accomodation with kitchenette?
3)What activities to do/things not to miss?
Any tips would be much appreciated!
Many thanks!!

Luganville is the capital of Santo, which has the second-largest airport in the country.
You might find a church Rest House with cooking facilities at a good rate.
Try the Anglican Church of Melanesia (which has its Vanuatu Headquarters in Luganville)

there are plenty of flights from port vila to luganville. They can be booked ina dvance from air vanuatu's website. There are also boats which can't be booked in advance. They are half the price of a flight, take 24 hours, are filthy, dangerously overcrowded, have no space to sleep but are a great way to meet locals if you can put up with the rest :)

There are plenty of hotels that in 2008 cost 1500 a night, with a common kitchen. I can't remember which I stayed in but just ask around when you arrive, that's what I did.

Things to do - beaches to the North, diving USS Coolidge, trekking in the jungle.

Before you get to Luganville get in touch with Luke Tokar of Paradise tours. Luke is a young ni-Vanuatu guy who runs a great professional outfit. Luke can arrange anything you need in Santo. Get him to arrange a canoe trip up to the Matevulu blue hole. Ask him about his Millenium cave trek as well.
