Malekula - Small Nambas and Big Nambas

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

Hello,
Are there any places on Malekula where the traditions of Small Nambas and Big Nambas people are still alive? I am not interested in dance shows performed for tour groups; I'd like to know if there are still villages, where people live the traditional way, like on some other islands of Vanuatu.
Mike

They live in rather traditional way, though that no longer includes cannibalism or even wearing traditional dress in everyday life - as in most of Vanuatu.
To see traditional dress in Malekula, you must be lucky to catch a festival or see a staged show, but there's more to culture than just dress.

Traditional dress is worn daily in parts of Santo, Pentecost and Tanna, but in fact the people who dress that way are not necessarily the ones who have preserved most of their traditional culture otherwise.

I didn't mean only the traditional dress, but generally the traditional culture.
There was a discusion here some time ago about the traditional life in Vanuatu, and somemody mentioned "the Small Nambas 'revival' in NE Malekula".
I'd like to hear something from people who had visited Malekula recently.

I trekked from one coast to another, right across the widest part of the island. Even right in the centre, two days walk from any road, no one wears nambas other than for special ceremonies / dances / festivals. Other than that life is very traditional, the area is very isolated and the people are extremely friendly.

Most men in northern Vanuatu wear a namba under their shorts. Look for the giveaway thin (only 3mm or so) plaited strap around their waist.
