Marum Volcano, Ambrym

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

Hi, I'm trying to find out if the lava lake still exists in the crater of Mount Marum on Ambrym. I'd appreciate any report / thoughts from anyone who's been there recently. Thanks!

I was there in September 2008 and the Marum lava lake was tiny but there. There's photos online of the lava lake getting bigger again in May 2009: http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/en/photos/vanuatu/ Not sure what happened since. Please post back here after your trip if you end up going, I'd be interested in a recent report too!

Hi,
I've just been to Marum one week ago. There is two lavalakes actually, one in the main crater and a smaller one in what's called Marums child.I was very happy to see them both,as my guide told me afterwards, that he goes up there every week for monitoring and has not seen the lava since, how he put it "end of last year"-it was always in clouds. He also told me that he has never seen it as active as now and that there's two more lavalakes in Benbow crater.
It was definetly one of the most amazing sights and experience I've ever made-if not the best. Not from this world.
I'll write a little tripreport in this forum soon-when I have a cheap internet connection again.
