Pele or Nguna?Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu
My boyfriend and I are going to Vanuatu in March for 2 weeks. We have already planned out one of those two weeks. The last week we wanted to go to either Pele or Nguna in addition to Tanna. The main priority is relaxing in a beautiful enviroment and some surfing too if possible. Now we just can't make up our minds about what island to choose! I heard the surf is better at Pele...Is this true? Any suggestions?
It is very difficult to say which Island is better. Both are spectacular. Pele is smaller, easier to walk, and the view from the top of the hill is as breathtaking as Nguna. Last time there we stayed at Pele (Napanga Bungalow – with Chef Talang and his family) Very nice location with good snorkelling right in front of the bungalow, and plenty of good Island food. Pele Island is a place to relax and enter into direct contact with the local culture and nature. The top attraction is the snorkelling in the marine park. Nguna has no surf spots but also good snorkeling. Pele has a submerged reef at the corner entrance of the canal that separates Pele from Nguna. This place has all ingredients to produce a mind blowing right wave, but I never saw it breaking bigger than one foot, and people I’ve spoke with neither. It seems it needs a strong north swell, which happens only with a cyclone in the right position. If you get a wave over there, probably you’ll be the first. Take note that when I was there, a huge Tiger shark spent a couple of days patrolling the canal and them went away. So, take care and ask the locals (and the guys from the boat) if they spotted any shark lately. Chef George (if I am not mistaken about his name) must be consulted prior going out to surf in his property (he owns the reef too and will easily grant permission if asked –if you don’t ask, be sure he will be very angry. Well, it is a hard decision to choose between these two Islands, and my tip is to visit both. Hope it helped, and have a great time in Vanuatu. Roger | 1
Thanks, Roger - thats great! Looks like Pele will be our first choice and if we get enough time we'll visit both :) | 2
