It is certainly possible to see the land diving without taking a full-blown tour, but it will still be expensive. From Vila there are regular flights, and far less regular, and pretty rough but cheaper cargo ships like the Brisk that also carry passengers to Pentecost. However the land diving is seen as a magnet that attracts wealthy spectators and even if you go alone, you will be charge quite a big sum for being allowed to watch it. Add to that transport and accomodation costs, and tours may not look too bad any more. It would be worthwhile to go without a tour if you wanted to explore the area besides watiching this relatively touristy event. Pentecost is a beautiful, rugged island with pretty traditional cultures, and it is relatively well connected by sea to no less interesting neighbouring island like Ambrym or even Santo.

| cuppa50019:14 UTC06 Feb 2007 | Hi VY, My wife & I did it last year, but we flew into Pentecost from Malekula via Santo. I cant recall how much it cost to attend the Nangol, but recall being suprised at it being less than I'd expected. It's worth imho, planning to be there for a few days at least, if time permits. At the ceremony that we witnessed the only foreigners present were us two, a Czech backpacker, & a last minute arrival of a party of 4, obviously 'well heeled' Americans, who flew in & out within about 4 hours, (during which they complained loudly about anything they could). Drop me a line if you want to ask anything else.
Regards Cuppa
