Pindri

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

Inspired by the previous post. Walking through the forest near Black Bay I noticed bags of what looked like large brown seeds that had been harvested from the trees. Our driver said that they are called 'Pindri' for export. Anyone know what they are?

How large were the seeds? Inocarpus has very large seeds (4-5 cm diameter) and they are edible. It is also a coastal plant, but I doubt it is exported and the seeds tend to be collected from wild trees rather than cultivated. Betelnut is another possibility.

They were kind of oval shaped and probably around 5cm at the longest part. The bags were lying underneath wild trees rather than cultivated ones.

I just had a look on the net. It could be inocarpus, although the seeds were brown rather than green.

The seeds are brown - the outer, tough pulp is green and is eaten by flying foxes. Rats like the seeds and I think they are quite tasty too. Full species name is Inocarpus fagifer - "ifi" in some parts of the Pacific. I don't think there is anything else of that size that it could be.
