Public Transport from Tanna Airport

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

We are travelling to Vanuatu this Saturday and will fly into Tanna the following Friday. As we only need to travel to Lenakel we are wondering if it is possible to find public transport easily at the airport and how to recognise it in amongst the various accommodation place buses and trucks.

I have been to Tanna once before and was left at the airport by my accommodation provider (2 hours away) and had to find alternative accommodation and transport. It wasn't fun and I hope to avoid it happening again ;->

Thank you in advance for any help.

I have a similar question, I'm staying at Port Resolution Yaucht Club and they have quoted us 5000 vatu per person for airport transfers, is there a cheaper way to get across the island and back.

Don't know if this will be of much help but when we were there in 2006 we were able to catch a taxi van(quite the experience given the shape of the van) from Lenekal to our accommodation west of the airport. If I recall it cost about 400 vatu. At the time I got the impression this was a rather 'hit or miss' service. I'm not sure whether these vans pick up at the airport - if not, you could try walking to the main road(maybe a couple of minutes) to see if you can flag one down as it passes. Hopefully someone else will have more recent information. You might try having a look at the Vanuatu forum at tripadvisor as it seems more current.

Tanna gets so many high-paying day-trippers that the line between public transport and cars for hire has become pretty blurred.
Chances are that most drivers will want you to charter their vehicle, or at least pay much more than locals do anyway.
