Rowing in Vanuatu

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

Hi,
I'm traveling to Vanuatu 24/12 - 1/1 (quick trip!) but I'll be going to Espiritu Santo, Ambrym, and hopefully Pele. Does anyone know how I would go about organising a social row? I am currently completing my learn to row course and I'm a very basic beginner at this point but my mentor is hoping I can be competent enough to row in a single or a social row by Christmas. Also, not sure if it matters but I don't have facebook so I can't really use that as a way to make contacts. I have a few other questions but I'll post them separately. Thanks for the help. I'm finding rowing to be very addictive in a great way. Cheers.

Hi Angie,

I would have thought that it was going to be more paddling outriggers over there but there is the Vanuatu Rowing Association - Vanuatu Rowing Association
PO BOX 374
Port Vila
VANUATU
mastersinparadise@vanuaturowing.com

Found that on http://mastersinparadise.com/ under sponsors and contacts and there does not seem to be any email address or phone number but you could try that mastersinparadise one and if it is no longer active, info@ is always worth a try.
I have also seen a Port Vila rowing Club but that defaults to the Vanuatu Rowing Association which organises the Masters but there was a phone number - Boat Club
Address: Port Vila, Vanuatu
Phone: +678 541 8058

PI people being of a friendly nature, it could just be that if you rock up for a row, you would be welcome.

Their clubhouse suffered a lot of damage from the worst cyclone ever recorded back in April 2015 but looks as though things are better now, some info @ http://northshorerowing.org.au/article.php?article_id=516

I imagine they would be grateful for a donation and maybe you might even get interested in seeing if Australian rowing clubs have surplus gear that could be sent to them, a bit of a project but no doubt doable with some kind minded people supporting it - your mentor could possibly even advise.

I would not mind betting that out from PV, it will be the outriggers and that would be more my style in only ever having rowed surf boats or dinghies and row boats.

Have a good trip and ask about crabbing, they allegedly walk up the beach into your arms in some places.

Hi. Thank you so much for responding. I was able to get in touch via: mastersinparadise@vanuaturowing.com. They responded really quickly and are willing to row with me (beginner and all). They have a Learn to Row and Intermediate row on Saturdays from 7am-9:30am, but there is usually someone from the club present most days (and may be willing to schedule a row) from 5:30-9am and from 4-7pm. I'll definitely explore the option of exchanging info/gear with my local club and thanks for the tip with the crabs. I love to go crabbing!
Cheers,
Angie
