Santo accommodation and diving

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

Have done quite a bit of searching for accommodation in Santo but it seems that its very expensive. Most replies we have had are for AUS $ 200+ and one was for 600 a night! We normally dont book accommodation but our time is limited ( first trip away from the kids since they arrived! ) and we would like something reasonable this time. We are also here to dive.
So my questions are:
1 What is a reasonable price for comfortable accommodation and can any one recommend a place
2 We are going early May so is it possible to arrive there and find accommodation easily . We do fly in at 6.00 pm however. If we need to book is it better to deal with the hotel directly
3 What would be an approximate cost per dive in Santo
Thanks for any help

You can find accommodation from as little as $20/person/night in perfectly acceptable, friendly and clean places in Lugainville. These are of the motel/guesthouse type, not beach resorts, of course!
From my experience, no need to book.

both times I arrived in Lugainville I went straight to the small motel opposite the market (can't remember the name) and they had plenty of available rooms, 1500 vatu for a single.

Can you mention the last minute hotel booking place wotif.com on this site?

Even better check out this site: http://www.vanuatu-hotels.vu/

I'm an obsessive researcher and also always check out trip advisor.

If you're after something that's not quite local bungalow style but not the cost of the earth (well under $200 anyhow) check out oyster or turtle islands....the 2nd website seems to have cheaper deals than the aforementioned and they're a great locally supportive group...I would say get out of luganville fairly promptly and enjoy some out of town island magic - have a look at the positive earth website and go over to Malo if you're adventurous - or the sav blanc and oysters options while kiddy free sounds appealing too! We're going back to Vanuatu in April...counting the sleeps...
