Tanna family accommodation

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

Hi, my family (2 adults and 2 boys aged 13 and 10) are going to Vanuatu in September / October. Will probably spend about 6 days in Efate and 4 days in Tanna (I've been to Santo before).

Can anyone recommend good family accommodation in Tanna? Have searched the forum and web and found conflicting info about places like the Port Resolution Yacht Club and some of the places on the west side. A place like White Grass probably too expensive. We're keen on snorkelling, will also want to visit the Mt Yasur and kastom villages. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your help.

We stayed at Evergreen Bungalows for 3 nights and can recommend them - they are not that far from White Grass. They have a website and answered e-mails fairly quickly. They have a couple of different types of accommodation so you should find something to suit your family. They have a number of excursions to the volanco and kastom villages that they offer. You can snorkel in front of the bungalows, although entry may be difficult depending on the tide, or you can head up to White Grass. We also went to White Grass for a lunch and a dinner, a little more expensive than Evergreen but a lovely setting. There is some public transportation in the form of vans that run along the main road - we went into the village to visit the market and have a look around. Hope this helps!

Hi, my wife and I with our 3 boys (11,13,&15), stayed on Tanna Sept' 08 for 6 nights. Stayed 3 nights at Port Res. Pretty quiet, intermittent warm shower O.K brekky. Walked to Shark Bay (5 km. approx). Nice little snorkelling beach about 5 mins. walk(ask Werry, the owner). Really liked the place.(Payed 21000 vt. for accom. with basic brekky not ,sure of your budget) Next 3 nights we stayed at Smile Lava Bungalows with Phillip and his family. Real close to the volcano, it took 45 mins walk to reach the top. You can hear the volcano rumbling in the background from the bungalows like an approaching storm. Basic bungalow with 3 meals was 6500 vt,2500/adult,1500 for older child and younger were free. The meals were basic but O.K. I believe there was a karstom village close, but we didn't get there. Would recommend this place as well.
When we were on Efate we also stayed on Nguna Island , off the north coast. Reasonable snorkelling, and also got to sponsor a turtle (5000 vt). We stayed at Vat Vaka, but found them a bit impersonal. Apparently, according to some girls we met on the return boat, the place they stayed at just around to the east was a really good friendly place as well. The island just across from Nguna, Pele I believe, looked pretty good too. Vat Vaka was 13500 /night, with 3 meals
Hope this helps,Yasur at dusk is amazing.
