| adelwolf200119:45 UTC01 Apr 2007 | Hi friends. I'm goign to spend 4 1/2 days in TANNA Island but I don't know if it will be better to stay close to Mount Yasur and exactly in Port Resolution (there are cheap bungalows there) or on the west coast. I'd prefer to stay closer to the volcano but it seems there isn't any kind of public transportation to reach the town of LENAKEL on the west coast. Do anybody know TANNA Is. and provide me with reliable info about trasnportation on the island. I know that a return 4WD lift from the airport to Port Resolution is 5000VT but am I wrong that might be a sort of truck or minibus that take inhabitants from one part of the island to the other? thanks a lot for your help Adolfo

There ARE pickup trucks serving the East Coast villages, however they are irregular and in Tanna these are known for shamelssly overcharging foreigners. The alternative is to walk - following the road, you could cross the island in day, and try your luck bargaining for a lift with any car passing by. If you have such a short time to spend there, you might as well just pay up.

If you do stay there , Werry the manager can easily arrange transport for you to anywhere , at a price of course ! 5000 vt return is what we paid for the trip airport to Port Res. , well worth it , two hours in the back of a pick up truck travelling along the 4wd roads waving to everyone , we thought the trip was one of the highlights.

If Yassur is active and spewing lava - then its awesome - in the real sense of the word but the overused yoof-speak .. but genuinely hairy .. some years since they had a fatality there.
Sailed there in 95 aboard NZ tallship - its a great place and much more authentic that Efate..
