Travelling overland on Pentecost;from Lonore to SaraCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu
Hi Does anyone know how much it would cost by canoe or speedboat from Lonore to Sara,or if its possible by road, how much that would cost/take to do? Thanks
I'm not familiar with either of these places? Do you mean Lorne? | 1
Big spin, these are located in Vanuatu. You are in the wrong branch. Aust and NZ are one branch up. | 2
Lonorore. | 3 | |
Daycat, come back when you have actually stayed at least one night on a Pacific Island (other than New Zealand or Lord Howe). | 4
Yes, thats what he thought. The OP spelt the first town name wrong... and Big Spin thought he (OP) meant Lorne. But Big Spin is new. But I will shut my dog mouth now. | 5
Expect to pay 1000. You will be sitting in the back of a pickup. Stay away from Lorne. The pickup there cost a bomb. | 6
I hope you mean 1000 Vatu. | 7
Under some or all state laws, passengers cannot be carried on the back tray of utes! Bombs, er, riding on the back of one that I dont know. 1000 Vatu is about Aud$10 eh? Isnt it a bit far to use a paddle boat to get by sea from L to S. Anyway, thanks to Uncle Sav for as close a sensible answer as possible. | 8
I'm still trying to figure out where Sara is. Never heard of it, but it might be just past Lorne. | 9
It's on an island further down south from the island that Lonorore is on. Google map it. Unless your ute or pax truck is submissive, would say a speed boat or boat or paddler is the most apt. | 10
Would a monorail help ? I know where there's one going cheap. | 11
Wish I could have helped the OP on a deeper level. Apologies. | 12

Sara is where the airstrip is right up the north end of Pentecost, Lonorore is in SE pentecost and is where the main airstrip is. It is very unlikely that you would get one truck all the way, More likely is that you would need several days to do it in stages, like Sara to Bwatnapne, Bwatnapne to Melsisi, then Melsisi to Lonorore. It will likely cost you about the same as flying too - you won't get far on 1000 vatu. I worked a lot on Pentecost 15 years ago and prices were about 5000vatu from Lonorore to Melsisi for waetman, only half way to Sara. Maybe you can get it cheaper if a truck is going anyway - you would have to ask around at your guesthouse or at the nakamal in the evening. Also the passable road ended at Bwatnapne but maybe that has been fixed now. Boats are expensive too - a 4m tinnie with 10HP engine used to ply the east coast but again was more expensive than flying and really only used to get to villages that dont have decent road access | 14
Thanks somewhat belatedly!Martin | 15
