| coolrun4116:38 UTC01 May 2011 | Hi,
First trip to Vanuatu, would like some info on treking on the islands. Go it alone? or best to sign on with a service in Port Vila? will be traveling mid Sept-mid Oct.
Thanks Steve

Neither! Get local guides in the villages closest to your starting point. Cheaper and puts your money where it is most deserved.
Several islands in Vanuatu offer great, off the beaten track hiking. The only hikes tourists ever do in any numbers are those up the volcanoes on Tanna and Ambrym.

There is no need to sign on in Port Villa. There are local tour operators there catering for all those who want to do it. I used the services of the Wrecks to Rainforests company located near Apex Hotel in Luganville. There is no way to do it alone. You must go with a guide because you do not know the way to the village and you cannot just show up. The village itself reveals the true rural life of Vanuatu and is not a ' tourists show performance ' as I have encountered in other touristic places. Malekula island can also boast off some good treks but unfortunately I had no enough time to go there.
