Vanuatu last-minute

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

Hi,
Im flying to Sydney in sept. and was planning to spend around 3 months traveling around the Pacific. I plan to at least visit Vanuatu and Fiji this time (Ive been to the region a few times before). However, Ive not booked any flights save the one from Europe to Sydney. I was wondering how sucsesfull Id be sorting flights once I get there, ideally heading out 'quite soon' after arriving in Oz. My reasoning was I might be able to get some decent deals down there, compared to booking stuff in Europe. However Im now reading on this forum that september can get quite busy with holidaymakers and flights could be fully booked. Somehow I had reasoned that most Aussies have their big break over xmas/summer and sept/oct wouldnt be an issue.
I was wondering therefor if anyone could point me out to any decent travelagents (based in Sydney would be nice) or airlines that specialise in Pacific island travel. I was poking around Virgin blue's pacific website, but couldnt quite figure out how to enter a multi-stop trip (and to be fair id rather step into an office and chat to some people).

Hope I explained that properly :) and anyone can give me some pointers
cheers

Hi Bjorn,
Im heading to Vanuatu for the first time in mid September. We're leaving via Brisbane and flying in to Santo on the new direct flights with Air Vanuatu. I booked our flights directly with the airline and they were unbelievably helpful and friendly, really went out of their way and even sent me a package of tourist information and a DVD-ROM about Vanuatu. Cant rave enough abut the service I received - we'll see what the actual flight is like! I dealt with the Brisbane office but Im pretty sure they have an office in Sydney too. Check out their website. As for the airfares we managed to get a great deal - AUD$615 from Brisbane and thats return! They offer 20% discount on domestic flights to international customers too. Not sure about getting last minute flights. One final bit of info, the Australian school holidays start on the 29th Sept which is why we're heading there a little earlier. Sept/Oct is still pretty cool in most parts of Oz so I guess people want to head somewhere warmer. Christmas is the wet season in the pacific / northern Oz so its probably quieter at that time of year.
Have fun and let us know how you go!
Caitlin

Whatever you do, bear in mind that you MUST have a ticket out of any Pacific island country to be allowed in in the first place.
Vanuatu immigration definitely asks to see it, Fijians may not.

Ok thanks for the info guys! Again, I wasnt aware there was a sept/oct holiday break in Oz so Ill try my best to get things sorted before the 29th. When is everyone due back to school/work? (Im asuming this isnt the big summer break) A$615 sounds like a very good deal Caitlin, from what Ive seen online I dont think you can get much cheaper than that.
I was aware you needed to have a return ticket, which is probably for the better. Although it does take away some of the flexibility and 'charm' its more likely youll get stuck somewhere longer than youd want to be.

Cheers!

School holidays... well according to the education department website they vary slightly from state to state but are all wound up by the 15th October.

Ah, thanks for that! It might be an option then to goto Fiji first, stay for a couple of weeks, then head to Vanuatu. From other posts Ive gathered domestic flights might be an issue as well (added to getting there in the first place) as everyone is dead set on flying to Tanna to check out the volcano (as am I).
