Vanuatu - the same as...

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

I know this will sound VERY ignorant and I apologise if I offend. Is Vanuatu and Fiji similiar - in beaches, countryside, cities? I have been to Fiji and wondering if I should travel to Vanuatu.

Thanks in advance for your help.

No, they are VERY different!
Fiji's cities have a much more British colonial feel with a strong Indian influence than Port Vila, the only place I could call a "city" in Vanuatu..

As for the culture overall, Fiji feels more like Polynesia or India (depending on where you are), while Vanuatu is very Melanesian.

Regarding scenery, I found Vanuatu much more lush and green, with none of the huge plantations you see in Fiji.
Beaches in Vanuatu also tend to be much less developed than in Fiji - there's nothing like Fiji's hotel-lined Coral Coast there.

Culturally, Vanuatu feels much more traditional and friendlier than Fiji.

Totally agree with Laszlo

I agree, as well...but doesn't Suva remind you of Port Vila (the non-downtown touristy area of Part Vila, I mean)?

Not me for sure.
