vanuatu which islands to choose?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

Hi,

we willtravel to Vanuatu for 2 weeks in June this year.
We are planning to go to Pentecoste and Tanna.
We will have another 5 days inthe country.

Where else to go? We are hesitating between staying on Efate, visiting north-east Malekula or travelling to Santo.
What do yo suggest?

Thanks

Chris

I would recommend Santo due the beaches, Or, Spend a couple of days in Pele Island in a village (Talang Bungalows), north of Efate with a couple of days in Vila just to have a look how it is. In reallity, Santo needs more than 4 or 5 days. 7 will be nice. Yasur Volcano in Tana and Millennium Cave in Santo are top attractions in Vanuatu. If possible don't miss both.

I would say that Efate, Tanna and Pentecost will easily fill 2 weeks, and trying to visit more islands in such limited time could turn your trip to a frustrating rush.

If you choose Efate over Santo then take a look at Lelepa and Nguna islands just off the coast. Both are easy to get to by truck from Vila and then boat for a total of 1000vt.

Both have bungalow accommodation which means a slightly up market native hut. A typical price is 3000 per person including food. Lelepa has fishing but Nguna does not because there is a marine park nearby. Both have diving. Both give you an escape from the crowds of Vila without having to travel too far.

Here is the Lelepa website. I don't know of any websites for Nguna. You leave for Nguna from a wharf at Emau village.
