Weekend in Vanuatu

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

Hi

Planning a weekend in vanuatu in a few months for me and my girlfriend.
Leaving from Sydney we are landing in port vila and have about 3 days to do as much as possible. well at least one day will be relaxing on a beach weather permitting, and probably will rent a car and drive around the island.

I was wondering if anybody could give me some advice on;

what not to miss?

Accomodation, nothing too expensive?

Im not a surfer or scuba diver, just like relaxing and seeing the sights, as much as possible to make it worth it

Thanks in advance,

any advice would be great

3 days isn't much to explore Vanuatu. I suggest getting more time because many of the best places in Vanuatu are not on the main island. You can't miss Tanna Island watching Mt. Yasur explode right in front of you!

Check out this link for good accommodation: http://www.positiveearth.org/bungalows/index.htm

By only staying 3 days you are cutting yourself out of all the packge deals from the resorts. Try the Melanesian which is a fairly good mid priced place. There are a couple of car rental yards 1 block behind the Melanesian. Olympic is cheaper but you must be a good sleeper - the hotel is in the main street and a bit noisy. Here are some tour websites.

If you want to go to Tanna

If a day at the beach appeals then jump in a bus and ask for Pango (pronounced like "hung oh"). Take a bus going right to left as you face the harbour. Sometimes you even get surf. Buses come back all day - just wait out on the main road.

For Efate this link may be handy

When driving around Efate some good places to stop (going clockwise) are The Havannah, Eton Beach and Tammanu on the Beach
