Where to stay in Tanna?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

Hello!

What would You recommend, staying in the Port Resolution area, close to John Frum villages (thinking of the Friday night party;-) ) and Yasur volcano, or in the Lenakel area? (I probably will be staying for 5-6 nights in Tanna)

Insider tips of resorts/guesthouses/bungalows also would be appreciated.

If I had to choose just one, I'd pick the Port Resulation area, but with 5-6 nights on hand, the best thing would be to stay on both coasts to allow you to explore both areas more leasurely.

Hi there

Just got back 2 days ago after 2 weeks holiday in Vanuatu. Spent 5 days in Tanna, which I consider too long. Spent 3 nights at Port Resolution Yatch Club. From there we went to the Volcano-it is only 30mins drive away. There is a nice bay but the snorkelling was dissapointed. We went to see Sharks at Shark Bay and visited the hot spring.Went for walks on the black sand beach..after that nothing else to do.There is horse riding but this is also available on the other side of the island. The advantage of staying at Port Resolution is the short drive to the volcano.Trip to volcano starts around 5pm until 7pm to get to see volcano both during day and night time.If staying on the other side it is 1.5hrs drive i.e: 3 hrs return..whicn mean after seeing the volcano you have to drive all the way back.

Then we spent 1 night at Lenakel Cove Resort, from there we did the 'Black magic and kava tour' which is a must-do,very entertaining. From there we move to Tanna Evergreen bungalow where I did the best snorkelling in Vanuatu..just from the shore after swimming for 2 mins in swallow water the reef falls abruptly vertically down to 30-40meters deep, arond the 'rim' there are lots of live corals with lots of fish..saw 'nemos', seasnake..very clear water with good visibility especially if it is sunny...amazing snorkelling, highly recommended.

You can do vilage tours from anywhere on the island..The 'Yakel village' next to Lenakel is the best one to visit as they still live as if it is centuries ago.wearing only leaves and grass skirt.

Everything can be done from any accomodations on the island...they all provide tours with guide and transport. It all depends on how much travelling you want to do...

I think staying on both side of the island is better as you get a feel of the whole island.

In terms of accomodation Port Resolution Yatch Club was a dissapointment...the standard has dropped a lot..food not good either..will recommend Turtle Bay Inn..a bit more pricey but bette accomodation.Tanna evergreen is nice and clean..but need to book ahead as usually booked out.White Grass Resort very nice but mych more expensive..

Hope that helps..

We also spent 6 days on Santo..give me a yell if you need any mroe info

Thank You for Your answers! Wery informative.

seyns:
In Santo I consider going to Lonnoc Beach and perhaps Port Olry. I will be staying for 6-8 days, I hope.

Since I am going in March/April, hope to see the land-diving on Pentecost also.
I have contact with a travel agent (Vanuatu Discovery) in Port Vila for domestic airline tickets and some land arrangements, like the Nagol.
Also hope I can squeeze in a couple of days on Maewo or Ambryn.
