Which island in Vanuatu?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu

Hi, I am planning a trip to Vanuatu for next June. Besides Port Vila and Santo, I want to go to one island in between; does anyone have a recommendation? thanks

Pentecost

Thanks Sav - any special reason? We're leaning towards Malekula for the ease of flights and also because there seems to be lots to do; hiking, cannibal sites, snorkeling, beaches..

We will be arriving in late June so should miss the nanggo (bungee type thing) in Pentecost.

Cheers

Fly to Lonorore airport where there is a jump every Saturday in June. There is another at Londot, which is a little further south, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Flights from Vila go on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday in the morning at roughly 8 am.

This year's entry fee is 12,000VT. There are several bungalows in the area if you want to stay a few days. I don't know their current rates but it would be 2,500 or 3,000. Expect to pay about 500 for transport which means sitting in the back of a truck. Take cash.

Thanks, would you recommend anything else in Pentecost?

Most of Pentecost is dead quiet. If you are OK with splendid isolation this place is good and is fairly close to the airport.

DBC - what sort of experience are you looking for?

Tanna is a fantastic island for adventure, active volcano, cultural experiences etc. Very remote, limited electricity etc at your resorts but such an amazing location.

Santo is a diving a snorkelling mecca.

Tanna - I'd say the 3rd more 'touristy' island due to the volcano. Awesome experience though.
Pentecost - go for relaxing? I loved the snorkelling there - 30m wide reefs that go on for kilometres.
Ambrym - another island with volcanoes. I liked Tanna and Pentecost more though.
Epi - cute and small, looks onto Ambrym's volcanoes - so you can get to them without staying on Ambrym.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses, sorry have been away in Japan - great skiing destination!!
I would love to go to Tanna, but I think we only have time for Santo and one island in between there and Villa. We are leaning towards Malekula just because its a bigger island and there will be more to do. Also, its an easy direct flight from Santo and then on to Villa. Does this sound like a good idea. We are looking for a bit of trekking, beach time, and cultural actives. thanks,

I recommend Tana or Malekula or Ambrym.

How many days are you planning to stay in Vanuatu ?

Hey all, thanks for the replies.

We are going in late June so will not be around for the Naghol in Pentecost. Our plan so far is Santo for 4 nights, Tanna for 2 nights and Efate for 4 nights.

I am struggling to see what we can do for 4 nights in Efate and are thinking about staying in Santo longer for the trek to see the MalMal little people. What would you recommend?

thanks all

There is a lot to see in Port Vila: Mele Cascades, Summit Gardens, Lini Highway and the Beachfront. Definitely go to Tanna, it's worth it! If you stay there only 2 nights, stay at the Evergreen Resort close to the airport and do the volcano day tour with them. There are direct flights to Tanna from Vila and Santo. You could do 3 nights Vila and 3 nights Tanna though ...

Hi Obi81, thanks for the tip on Tanna, we actually have booked at the Evergreen.

DBC...I'd recommend not staying there tbh. Have reviewed it on a travel agent work trip last December and was not impressed.

Whitegrass resort for me was much better, but if it is a budget thing maybe you are after than certainly head to Evergreen.
