Yasur Volcano, TannaCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Vanuatu
Does anyone have up-to-date info on the state of the volcano? The current UK Government advice is "do not go" and we have heard reports that the island is covered in dust and not very pleasant. Can anyone confirm/deny this? We are planning to go in February and know things can change in the next three months, but current info would be helpful. Thanks.
I was there 4 weeks ago. There was certainly plenty of volcanic activity and it was spectacular. The erruptions were felt phycially. No the whole island is not covered in dust and that would be a bit hard to imagine but there is an ash plane surrounding the volcano. I am not an expert in volcanology so I cant advise on safety or otherwise but the best past of my time in Vauantu was the time spent on Tanna. We stayed on night at the Port Resolution Yatch Club and from there went to the volcano. If I was to return I would stay for longer as there is access to gorgeous beach after just a short walk through the jungle and I really enjoyed the interaction with the locals. Other people we met stayed at Turtle beach which was apparently very pleasant. Most of our time was spent at Sunset Bungalows on the other side of the island. Host Helen is lovely and her home cooked food was to our liking. If I was doing it again I would take some supplies with me and spend some more time at Port Resolution. | 1
Does anybody know what's the situation with the Yasur now? Me and a friend of mine planned to go there in late July, but if Yasur remains closed (as it was since June 5) we might as well stay in Port Villa. | 2
We were there mid-June when activity was Level 2 and could go to the "safety barrier flagging"at the crater rim. A high point on the east gave a good view along the crater with two vents quite active. It is best to get to the top around dusk when there is enough light to see the crater walls etc but dark enough for the exploding lava to glow red. The previous week it was at level 3 with molten bombs landing in the car park - so a "no go" then. BUT DON'T JUST GO TO TANNA FOR THE VOLCANO. It is a great place, much quieter and less developed than Efete. People are v friendly. | 3
