Useful email addresses for WallisCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Wallis and Futuna Islands
You may find following email addresses useful for planing a visit to Wallis: hotel.lomipeau@mail.wf For pictures from Wallis see: http://picasaweb.google.com/martin.guenter.fischer/WallisIsland?feat=directlink&fgl=true&pli=1# It's a beautiful island with friendly people and is very slow paced. There's hardly any tourism. Even finding someone to take us to a small island in the lagoon was difficult. During weekends when local people also want to go, it's probably easier.
Thanks a lot. It is good to have some up-to-date impressions and information about this rather uncommon destination now, However not really the place to go for the budget traveler, I assume, when I read that "At least for someone living in Tokyo prices are like at home." I love that. Prices not higher than in Tokyo, the most expensive city in the world. I wonder how the locals get along. Are the wages like in Tokyo too? | 1
The locals live on French money! :-) | 2
Wallis is not really suitable for budget travelers. But then, are any islands in the Pacific? It's not like in SE Asia or India. The LP guide book said that Wallis made Tahiti look cheap. When comparing Wallis to other places where I have been during the last 2 or 3 years, like New Caledonia, Palau or FSM then Wallis is not or at least not much more expensive than these islands. A lot of items in the supermarket in Mata Utu are cheaper than in Tokyo. But OK, that does not mean that Wallis is cheap, it just shows how ridiculous many prices in Japan are. The local French residents get very good salaries and can afford Wallis prices and as Laszlo said, the Wallisian locals have their own home, grow their own food and don't need to buy many things. Doing Wallis on a low budget is probably not possible. As far as I know camping is not allowed as everywhere is private property. As far I could see Hotel Lomipeau and Albatros are the only open hotels. BTW, you can write to the above mentioned email addresses in English. Being able to speak French is not really essential. | 3
I really think camping should be possible on Wallis, even though it has no campgrounds. | 4
